Ice Cube Criticised For Not Helping Newcomers

After raising eyebrows last week with in a blog where he said he isn’t obligated to help “local L.A. rappers,” Ice Cube penned another entry this Thursday (March 25) where he clears the air about his statements. Last week, the veteran rapper stated: “It ain’t my job to make nobody famous.” Some took offense, including newcomer Jay Rock who felt Cube’s comments were aimed at the “New West” (a group of rising Cali rappers), which he says he’s proudly a part of. Well, Cube elaborated on the statement in a new blog entry, saying he wishes the young rappers all the success, but says he can’t stand when new artists diss the OGs … namely him. “I want to make myself clear to all my fans who think I turned my back on the young rappers out here. No,” Cube wrote. “I wish every young MC nothing but success, especially the ones from the New West. BUT, I have a major problem with any mothafucka from ANY COAST dissing the Old West … especially me. I’M SERVING YOU!” He also explained why he hasn’t helped introduce any new artists since WC and Mack 10. Cube is tired of “babysitting,” he says, adding that an artist under him does blow, they are ungrateful. “I got burnt out. Niggas couldn’t take the baton and run wit it,” Cube said. “I was sick of babysitting grown ass men and walking them through the industry. I felt like Dr. Frankenstein building uncontrollable monsters. How? If you DON’T make’em a star, they blame you. If you DO make’em a star, they leave you. I got sick of that ungrateful shit.” Aside from controversy, Cube has filmed the music video for his first single, “I Rep That West.” However, it was unknown when it premiere. I Am The West is slated for release July 13. - By Ronnie Gamble Published 03/26/2010
