Oprah visited down under, even Queen Elizabeth and her grandsons, Princes William and Harry walked our red carpets last year. Now we wait, firmly held in 2012 for the inaugural visit of hip hop’s leading protagonist, acting strictly for the cause and survival of a culture. KRS One, (born Lawrence Parker) is poised in San Francisco to board a boat and head for our golden shores. Afraid of flying, Parker will take the month-long trip down under with an agenda to inject knowledge into our our hip hop culture with a “booster shot.”

Following some stringent protocol to get him in session, Parker lets loose over 50 minutes with a booming authority over his words. Holding a genuine concern for the upkeep of his culture, Parker lays out an economic model for the survival of Australia’s hip hop scene in today’s new world which he believes finds the balance of power shifted in favour of it’s forebearers and creative souls who maintain the culture’s equilibrium behind it’s commerce. Charting a takeover, Knowledge Reigns Supreme Over Nearly Everyone sets sail to arm us in readiness for the new world.

KRS One interviewed for Rip2Shredz // Street Press Australia // Hiphop.sh @ 08.45 AEST Saturday, 04th February, 2012

What would your main objective be on this auspicious trip down our way?

I’ve waited a long time for this. There is a couple of places I’m trying to go to over the next three years. And Australia is just one of them that I’ve been trying to get to for a many years. There has always been challenges, so when i come to a place i don’t just want to come to the place, perform and leave. I don’t like flying into a country, flying over a country. Beyond that, go straight to the hotel from the airport and to the venue and to the hotel and to the airport and then say ‘OK, I’ve been to Australia.’ That’s not my style at all so i waited it out.

Promoters have been calling me over the last 10 years, people been calling. Some called but the money wasn’t right, others called and the transportation wasn’t right. Others called but there was opening acts on the bill that i didn’t agree with. So now i have a great promoter and he suggested i get over here by sea. So when i realised we can sail from San Francisco, California to Sydney, Australia i was ecstatic to be able to get this opportunity and this is how the tour all starts. That’s the personal reason as to why it’s happening now, in that sense. This promoter that I’m dealing with is pandering to KRS One and the way KRS One would like to come to Australia. Other promoters were telling me how to come to Australia. This certain promoter is assisting me in coming to Australia…

Dilated Peoples has always played a pivotal role in Southern Cali’s left-sided movement, advancing their hip hop to a more consciously-aware state. Before they set to drop their 2012 LP, MC Rakaa Iriscience enjoys his moment in the sun with his solo work, 2011’s Crown Of Thorns. But, despite holding down his own royal affair, it’s fellow Los Angeleno and Dilated Peoples MC Evidence’s Cats & Dogs (just released) that’s held the main focus of Taylor and the Peoples’ as of late. Rakaa takes time out while campaigning for Ev’s album, to discuss the legacy of Dilated Peoples and his own first solo outing.

You said in a recent interview that Crown Of Thorns is the most honest work you’ve done and the most worldly out of L.A.’s illustrious reality rap scene - what did you do to make it more worldly?

I worked with producers and vocalists from different parts of the world, featured multiple languages and cultures, and allowed my worldview to shine through.

The solo experience - did you find freedom or isolation?

Actually both. It was pure freedom, which can be a bit scary and intimidating after years of support that comes from creative compromise. I did feel isolated sometimes, but I also know that I never walk alone – even though I always stand on my own two feet as a man.

From Newsone:

LOS ANGELES– Heavy D, the self-proclaimed “overweight lover” of hip-hop who became one of rap’s top hit-makers with wit, humor and a positive vibe, has died. He was 44. Lt. Mark Rosen of the Beverly Hills police said Heavy D died in a Los Angeles hospital Tuesday after collapsing at his condominium building.

Rosen said Beverly Hills police officers were dispatched to Heavy D’s condominium building Tuesday morning after receiving a report of an unconscious person laying on the walkway of a building. They found Heavy D was conscious and communicative but had difficulty breathing and was transported to Cedars Sinai Medical Center, where he later died.

Rosen said Beverly Hills detectives found no signs of foul play and believe his death is medically related. He said Heavy D “was returning home from shopping. He experienced difficulty breathing while walking into his condominium building. He was being assisted up to his apartment by building personnel when he collapsed in an exterior hallway.”

The last tweet from Heavy D posted Tuesday morning read, “BE INSPIRED!”

Dwight Arrington Myers, the rapper known as Heavy D of Heavy D and the Boyz, and his crew released their debut album “Living Large” in 1987. Their hits included “Now That We Found Love,” “Who’s the Man” and “Somebody For Me.”

The New York-born rapper was one of the genre’s most integral stars in the last 1980s and early 1990s, as it relied on new voices and star power to fuel its phenomenal growth in the mainstream.

The deep-voiced rapper’s earliest hit, “The Overweight Lover’s in the House,” played up his hefty frame. But while that nickname would stick, his weight did not become part of his shtick, like the Fat Boys. What drew people to his music was his singular style, which celebrated an easygoing, party vibe – sometimes humorous, sometimes inspiring and almost always positive.

In the mid-1990s, Heavy D became president of Uptown Records, the label that released most of his albums and was also the home to acts like Mary J. Blige and Jodeci. He also created the theme songs for sketch comedy shows “In Living Color” and “MADtv” and acted on the TV shows “Boston Public” and “The Tracy Morgan Show,” as well as in the films “Life” and “Step Up.”

“Most know Heavy D as a rap icon,” said actor-comedian Tommy Davidson. “I considered him a brother who made an indelible mark on me as a performer and a human being. I miss him already.”

Combined with the fusion of the “New Jack Swing” musical style, Heavy D was a constant presence on the charts, and also a go-to figure for several performers. He collaborated with such artists as Michael Jackson on the 1991 single “Jam” and the 1997 duet “Keep It Coming” with B.B. King.

Heavy D attempted a reggae-fueled comeback in 2008 with the album “Vibes,” which didn’t contain any rapping. He returned to rapping on his latest album, “Love Opus,” which was released in September, and he performed a medley of his past hits at the 2011 BET Hip Hop Awards last month.

“I’m so glad that we got to work together for his performance at last month’s BET Hip-Hop Awards,” said Stephen Hill, BET’s president of music programming and specials. “Hev was focused, energetic and happy. He worked hard, as he always had, to excite the crowd. Our condolences go to his family and specifically his daughter who he doted on. He was a unique figure in hip-hop and will be missed.”

He also had a cameo appearance in the new movie “Tower Heist,” starring Eddie Murphy and Ben Stiller.

ONE OF THE BIGGEST BREAK OUT ACTS IN HIP HOP, NAUGHTY BY NATURE HAS ALWAYS BEEN ABLE TO STRIKE A NERVE, HOLDING DOWN THEIR TRUE IDENTITY WHILE TAKING IT TO MAINSTREAM NOTORIETY WITHOUT HAVING THEIR GHETTO PASSES REVOKED. TWENTY YEARS AFTER O.P.P. STICKERED THE CHARTS, THE NEW ALBUM ANTHEM INC. IS SET TO CEMENT THEM REAL RAP IICONS. VIN ROCK TALKS TO RIP NICHOLSON.

VinRock (Naughty By Nature) interviewed for Rip2Shredz // Street Press Australia // Hiphop.sh @ 09.20 AEST - Aug 25, 2011

Naughty By Nature went back to their gully, Illtown roots of New Jersey to shoot the video for a new single, but as Vinnie ‘Vin Rock’ Brown explains, they never left. Now fresh from a tour with Redman and Method Man stretching from France to Brasil (and Australia this month), the hardcore hip hop trio feel as young as ever on stage.

20 years in the game now! Congratulations. Are you guys feeling that legacy on your shoulders now?

We been movin’ around so much lately… i can’t even tell. We all still young and very youthful and we’re out there working on stage, jumping around and burnin’ them calories.

Does it put pressure on your new work? or does it feel the same as it did 20 years ago?

Yeah i believe that we have no real pressure and we don’t have to live up to those legacies. We just did it and the accolades came along with it. So we take it like, ‘hey we won this for hip hop.’ We doin’ this for a lot of the people and whatever is whatever on the back end, you know?

Internationally represented, London’s Estelle rapped nice and Soprano dropped the quickest 16 in French and it was wonderful to see Lady Of Rage back on her afro puffs swinging forth with some of the illest bars of the night; “Lyrically, you would be a fool to fight with the Robin Givens of spittin’ shit / I’m cruel to mics, yikes / I’m goin’ in like a lifer / step into your radius and decipher your cypher.”

This year’s XXL freshmen, Dom Kennedy, Yelawolf, Big K.R.I.T. all showed skills as did Kendrick Lamar who came in early going, “2012 on a 12 inch” calling suckers “mascots on a Kim Kardashian ass shot” and Busta Rhymes who was circled around Ludacris, Reek Da Villain and 2Chainz came merciless with the whoop-ass on his Disney-animated scowling beatdown and snatched the lead early in. Then on Maybach’s round Meek Mill brought this heat; “Sheesh! I’m like R.I.P / I brought 2Pac Back, then it’s BIG / America’s most wanted like Chi-Ali / I’m too young to be doing this, they need to see ID / Ross said I’m hot, TIP said I’m hot, Swizz said I’m hot / Your chick said I’m hot.”

But on the 7th and final round, from Detroit’s 8 Mile - Shady Records’ Eminem unleashed ‘white dog’ Yelawolf before the Slaughterhouse four one-by-one butchered-down every MC. Returnee to the annual event, Joe Budden staggered his start; “done took the wine out of Amy House,” and “I don’t blame y’all for being trash fans and copping it / The radio’s the crime scene the masses are the hostages / In my youth I throw shots, the fan would be dodging it / I’m grown, I ain’t watching the throne, I’m sabotaging it.”

32-plus bars later, Budden showed why he’s a revered member of Slaughterhouse. Royce Da 5’9 weirded out with his ‘Hi Rihanna’ lines and high anticipation for Joell Ortiz was met with the swiftly-rapped “Ortiz keep they fire ready / And trying to put me out’s like trying to steal a transvestite from Eddie” and Crooked I snatched back with “I spot a victim, the plot’ll thicken when the clock is tickin’ / I caught em slippin, I gotta give em a shot, I hit ‘em with proper spittin’ / Hottest writtens and compositions, so competitions a contradiction.”

Rabbit was reborn when Mr. Mathers, who took his one moment to a career-high of lyrical beatdowns once again stormed on to shut down the whole event: “Can Yelawolf fit a fifth of rum in a big cup between stickshiftin in his friggin pickup / and drink like a hick redneck hill billy until he gets hiccups? / Flippin the script up like Mike Vick gettin his junk bit by a pit, yup, Ima sick pup / Id be a horrible magician, cause Ill fuck a trick up / Fix your lips up to say something fly, or zip up.”

At which point Joe Budden walked off in defeat, much like everyone else.

Never fight fair with a stranger. You’ll never get out of the jungle that way …

—Arthur Miller, Death of a Salesman

In 30 minutes, the rapper Game will instruct his 583,000 Twitter followers to dial (310) 605-6500 if they would like to be his intern. In two hours, the Los Angeles County Sheriff will open a criminal investigation against the Compton artist, who claimed to have “accidentally” directed his fan base to flash-flood the phone lines of the organization’s Compton office — temporarily crushing its ability to respond to reported crimes. Later, he will blame both hackers and his cousin Wack Star for hijacking his account. But right now, speaking from a bedroom in the Koreatown apartment he has commandeered as a makeshift media center, Game claims he’s not promoting his album.

This doesn’t match the timeline of his last eight hours, balancing photo shoots and interviews with everyone from L.A. Weekly to esoteric art quarterlies to Fuel TV. And when he’s not taunting Compton law enforcement about its inability to catch murderers, his Twitter page is alight with references to his The R.E.D. Album, released this week.

“I don’t promote shit — the label does. That’s how you got here. All I do is rap,” says the 31-year-old, who was born Jayceon Taylor. He talks while texting in a Transformers shirt next to a sixth-floor window, looking up to smirk with the self-assured dismissiveness of a former class clown and varsity letterman.

Rapper DMX could be a free man later today, after serving six months in an Arizona jail for violating the terms of his previous probation. In March, DMX was sentenced to six months in jail, after the rapper tested positive for having cocaine in his system, a violation of his previous probation.

According to a tweet from longtime producer Dame Grease, DMX is slated for an early release today, almost two months earlier than anticipated. Multiple sources told AllHipHop.com that DMX would be hitting the road for spot dates shortly after he is released. DMX may also join the cast of Dr. Drew’s Celebrity Rehab as well, as producers are still scrambling to find troubled stars to participate in the show.

Former Death Row CEO, Suge Knight was arrested just after midnight on Thursday morning (May 20)in Gardenia and held by authorities for driving with a suspended license. His lawyer denies claims of any altercation with a deadly weapon. For the news [CLICK HERE] In light of recent news of the former mogul of West coast hiphop being locked up, XXL editor Meka sums up a modern-Suge Knight, the man after the Untouchable tag removed and industry pass revoked, twice Debo’ed and resorting back to smacking on naked bitches. This couldn’t have been done better, it’s a wrap! Taken from XXL Mag.com Posted Friday 21st May, 2010 by Meka

‘Suge Knight… Damn, Homie’

Even though Marion “Suge” Knight is years removed from his Freddy Krueger-like urban legend tales of funding Death Row Records by (allegedly) dangling Vanilla Ice by his ankles off a hotel room balcony, (allegedly) setting up multiple beatings of anybody who dared breathe in his direction the wrong way and (allegedly) running with the Bloods, it’s still going to be hard-pressed for anybody of the Internets community to actually try to step to him today since most of this site’s visitors prefer Street Fighter to street fighting. However, eventually Suge had to get some sort of comeuppance, and it’s seemed that karmically he’s been catching wreck in spades. Some would even say he’s long overdue for it as well. I don’t think anybody envisioned this kind of getback, however. Having your underwear of all things sold at a public auction is embarrassing enough, but getting robbed and shot at a Kanye West (I know, right?) after party, having the label your created, Death Row Records, taken out from under him, then punched out in the middle of the street… twice – once by a barber, the other by Akon’s weed carrier – is just something else. That’s not to mention the many lawsuits and bankruptcy filings he’s had to face.

Thing is, in spite of his current losing streak, Suge is still doing the things that got him caught up in the first place. I don’t ever support throwing hands at a woman unless it’s in the name of self-defense, yet he caught a charge for beating his girlfriend, and blamed of robbing both Luniz member Yukmouth for his jewels and – perhaps in retaliation for getting his face crushed in – another weed carrier of Akon. You would think that he’d learn from the past and, at the very least, “soften” up his style in a similar, quasi-homosexual manner Master P did when he turned No Limit into a child-friendly, curse-free endeavor, especially as a 45-year-old man who hasn’t been musically relevant in over a decade. Of course, I’d only recommend this to him from a safe distance. While things haven’t been exactly chipper for him, Lord knows I’m still not trying to be on the receiving end of a Suge Knight special. Look at what happened to Yukmouth. And his girlfriend. And Orlando Anderson. And that guy he had jumped half to death at Long Beach’s Lakewood Mall back in the 90s. I mean I could sue him afterwards, but what good would that do when the guy had his draws repossessed? That turnip was squeezed dry a long time ago. Suge should at least take pride in the fact he helped usher in a new era of music and business management. However, if I could give him a word of advice I’d recommend he should have ridden off into the sunset years ago as the feared mogul you once were, as trying to cement your legacy as a 45-year-old stick up kid just really isn’t working at this point. It didn’t for OJ Simpson. But then again, I like retaining the ability to reproduce children and walk without mechanical assistance, so you can take my advice with a grain of salt.
