Throwback: Ice Cube at Mom's House 1989
Apr 1 2008 7:49 AM EDT
Ice Cube Welcomes MTV To His Home In South Central L.A. In The Loder Files, circa 1989. A vintage visit amid the firestorm of controversy that surrounded N.W.A's 'Fuck Tha Police.'
When you've been interviewing people for, oh, a hundred years or so, you build up quite a backlog of banter and chat. A lot of this stuff is inevitably ephemeral — the day will surely never come when anyone cares what Vanilla Ice ever had to say about anything. On the other hand, it is kind of interesting to look back on the vintage natterings of people who are still on the scene and still entertaining us, either with their work or with their dotty behaviour.
We've been exhuming a ton of this stuff over the last several months — interviews from the vaults going back not only to the early '90s, but even beyond. Most of these ancient tapes are fun in one way or another; some are scary, which is even more fun. We're going to be posting these old interactions every Tuesday from now on, and if some of what you see seems a little silly at times, well, the past is filled with silly things. Much like the present.
N.W.A may not have been the first gangsta-rap act (ask Schoolly D), but they were the most sensational at the time, and probably the most lastingly influential.

Dre Makes No-Show Over Bodyguard's Car Crash
DR. DRE was forced to scrap an on-stage reunion with rappers and EMINEM and SNOOP DOGG at the last minute - after his bodyguards were involved in a car accident.
Snoop Dogg was to be joined by "surprise guests" Dre and Eminem when he took the stage for the Our World Live concert in Los Angeles on Tuesday (07Apr09), according to the New York Daily News. But Dre bowed out after his security staff crashed their car in bad weather, and the rapper was advised not to attend without bodyguards. And Snoop was left to hit the stage solo when Eminem also pulled out of the lineup, because he reportedly refused to hit the stage without his rap mentor, Dre.
No further details of the car accident were available as WENN went to press.

As ICEDOTCOM put it, It's painfully clear that Eminem can no longer rap. We've waited years for this, he has returned to the same piss-poor gimmicky poke at everyone in the MTV world. Fuck off Marshall and make real hip-hop you became famous for. - Rip [Ed.]

Cover: Rolling Stone Has Lil Wayne Rocked Out
via Rolling Stone
How does arguably the greatest rapper on Earth follow up a blockbuster like 2008’s Tha Carter III, an album that moved more than 1 million copies its début week and solidified Lil Wayne’s place in hip-hop history? By shifting gears and attempting to conquer rock & roll. Rap’s alien genius opens up to Mark Binelli about his upcoming rock album Rebirth in a series of revealing interviews for the cover of the new issue of Rolling Stone, on newsstands this week.
“The rock shit just comes from what my life is now,” Wayne, 26, says. “I’ve grown into this person.” He released his first album, 1999’s Tha Block Is Hot, when he was only 17, and built his name on being the busiest rapper in the game, dropping a relentless stream of mixtapes and cameos. (Revisit Weezy’s journey from kid MC to superstar, in photos.) But aside from plucking at electric guitars onstage and in videos, Weezy never let on that his rap career could take such a significant detour. Describing a wild night when he woke up in bed with three or four women he couldn’t name, Wayne reveals he had an epiphany. “I just got — I’m not going to say ’so good’ at what I was doing, but it became such a regularity for me that I got tired of it. And then I said, ‘You know what? I’m not going to rap on this one.’ “
